thedailywhat: Successful Prisoner Swap of the Day: Gilad Shalit, the first Israeli soldier returned alive from captivity in 26 years, was reunited with his family early this morning at Tel Nof Airbase after nearly 2,000 days in the hands of Hamas. “I’m very emotional,” Shalit said in an interview on Egyptian television following his release. “I haven’t seen people in a long time.” Though Shalit appeared gaunt and complained of sickness during the flight from Egypt, IDF Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Yoav Mordechai reported his condition as “good and stable.” Shalit was greeted by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu upon arrival at the IDF base near Rehovot. “Hello, Gilad,” Netanyahu is quoted as saying, “[w]elcome back to Israel. It’s so good to have you home.” 477 Palestinian prisoners were released by Israel in exchange for Shalit. “We thank God for your return and your safety,” Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said at a rally in the West Bank city of Ramallah. “You are freedom fighters and holy warriors for the sake of God and the homeland.” A second batch of 550 prisoners will be released in two months.
